Ben Zhu Wins 2024 DOE Early Career Award — A Milestone for the ABOUND and BOUT++ Teams

Ben Zhu, a research scientist in the Physics Division of LLNL’s Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 DOE Early Career Research Program (ECRP) Award. Ben is one of seven LLNL scientists recognized this year with no other institution receiving more than 4 awards. He is also one of just 91 national recipients of this highly competitive award, which highlights his outstanding contributions to fusion energy research.

Working on advancing edge plasma physics and modeling for fusion pilot plants, Ben is focused on pushing the boundaries of our understanding in this crucial area. Reflecting on this accomplishment, Ben shared, “I was thrilled when I found out the result. It is an honor to receive this award, especially as the first recipient from our theory and modeling group in LLNL’s Fusion Sciences program. I am deeply grateful to my mentors and colleagues both inside and outside the Lab—this award wouldn’t have been possible without their support.”

Ben began his journey at LLNL in 2018 as a postdoctoral researcher and quickly advanced to a staff scientist in 2020. With support from the ECRP for the next five years, he will focus on further developing advanced numerical models for magnetic fusion devices. His work will center on the complex physics of the fusion boundary plasma, particularly exploring new approaches to manage plasma exhaust, one of the most critical challenges in realizing fusion energy.

This recognition not only underscores Ben’s leadership in fusion energy science but also highlights the important contributions of the ABOUND and BOUT++ collaborations toward advancing fusion research.
